COVID detection by PCR
PCR - polymerase chain reaction -
The PCR test is considered the most reliable test because of its excellent sensitivity and specificity. To date, it is the most appropriate method at the onset of a viral outbreak. This method targets unique sequences in the viral genome for identification.
COVID detection by rapid test
Rapid Antigen Test
The rapid antigen test detects molecular fragments of membrane proteins of the COVID-19 virus. It allows to know in 15′ if a person is a carrier of the virus and therefore potentially contagious.
Because of its sensitivity, it is recommended for use from the onset of symptoms up to 7 days later. It is less reliable for finding the virus when there is little abundance, but it is faster and cheaper. However, not all tests have the same sensitivity and specificity. It is recommended to check the quality certificates.
Antibodies Test
Rapid screening test IgG and IgM antibodies
The IgG/IgM antibody test is an excellent screening method for both patients who have passed COVID-19 infection. It tests whether you are past infection or have developed immunity for both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals.
It is a rapid, low-cost test and is performed on a capillary blood sample.
